Simple Image Effects with the GiMP

Here is a picture of my freshly-married sister-in-law, Jessica. Using a Free photo and image editing program, the GiMP, we can easily create professional-looking results. Here, we will create a bite of all of those black and white with a splash of color pictures we all know.

Here is a before and after shot, the original source image is in color.

Since the flowers are our focal point (sorry Jess), we will use the shape select tool to help navigate all of the nooks and crannies around the edges.

Click on a point at the edge of your select area, then start clicking points around the edges and the tool will magically follow the shapes between the two points.

From time to time, you will need to drag the line where you want it to make small corrections. Once you have made a complete circle around your focal point, double click within your select area to activate it.

Since the area we have selected is already in the color we want, we actually want to work on the other portion of the image. To do this, use Select > Invert to reverse the area that is active.

Using the Layer > Colors > Desaturate command, we can remove the colors from the actively selected region. Voila! It's just that simple.

Our finished product. Total time: 5 minutes.
